Join IACP’s Police Research Advancement Section for a casual conversation with Louisville Metro Sergeant Jennifer Hall and Officer DeAris Hoard on their article “The Rise of the Pracademic” published in December’s Police Chief Magazine. Sergeant Hall and Officer Hoard have both achieved their PhD’s while continuing to serve the greater Louisville, Kentucky community. In 2021, Sergeant Hall was selected as LEADS Scholar through the National Institute of Justice and in 2025 Officer Hoard was named by IACP as “40 under 40” awardee. Both have extensive knowledge and application of evidence-based policing techniques. Engage with us and gain insight on how to identify current and future “pracademics”, leverage their skills and curiosity, and implement successful EBP strategies at your agency.

Dearis Hoard is a sworn officer with the Louisville Metro Police Department in Kentucky, serving since 2013 and currently working on patrol. An IACP 40 Under 40 awardee and Kentucky Colonel, he is also a criminal justice faculty member at Walden University and Franklin University.

Jennifer Hall is a Sergeant with the Louisville Metro Police Department in Kentucky, serving since 2006. She is currently leading the Research and Strategic Advancement Unit, focusing on enhancing officer performance and implementing evidence-based strategies. She is an NIJ Leads Scholar alumna and is transitioning to a position with the Ohio State University as a research scientist.
