Roadmap to Resilience Microlearning Videos

In this video series, you will learn about techniques to help you increase and support your resilience both on and off duty. The techniques covered include Staying in the Zone, Resilience in Between Calls, Downshifting, and Building Flexible Mindset. By incorporating these techniques, you will gain self-awareness, have better responses to situations, and increase your ability to cope with challenges while on duty.

Each video is between 5-6 minutes long. The estimated time to complete this full video series is less than 20 minutes. (Note: Each video can be watched individually.)

Overall Objectives: After watching this series, you will be able to able to identify a number of skills and describe how you can apply them to increase your resilience before, during, and after work.

Kyrus Branch

Deputy Chief

Arlington, Texas Police Department

Deputy Chief Kyrus Branch is an 18-year veteran of the Arlington Police Department in Arlington, Texas. He currently serves as a Deputy Chief and has worked in many units throughout his career, including Patrol, Covert Operations, Technical Services, Criminal Investigations, and Internal Affairs. Deputy Chief Branch has received many awards including Detective of the Year, the Vocational Service Award, sponsored by Rotary International District 5790, and the Kindness Award due to his dedication to anti-bullying in Arlington Independent School District.

Tabitha Hays

Officer

Baltimore County, Maryland, Police Department

Officer Tabitha Hays has been a member of the Baltimore County, Maryland Police Department since 2005. She is currently assigned to the Training Section where she instructs in multiple disciplines. She is a firearm, active assailant, tactical medicine, and first aid instructor along with numerous other instructor certifications. She has been named Officer of the Year twice and Officer of the Month nine times. In 2023, she was awarded Maryland Police and Corrections Training Commission Instructor of the Year for her agency. On May 21, 2018, Officer Hays was involved in a critical incident that resulted in the line of duty death of her friend and co-worker Amy Caprio. Less than one year later, in 2019, Officer Hays herself was shot and critically injured in the line of duty. Officer Hays endured numerous surgeries and months of physical therapy to return to duty. After over a year of treatment, she was able to return to full duty. For her actions in 2019, she was awarded the Mid-Atlantic Association of Women in Law Enforcement Valor Award as well as a Purple Heart. As a part of the training staff, she is using her experience and knowledge from those two significant events to help better equip, train, and prepare her fellow officers and recruits for response to critical incidents. She also joined her agency’s Peer Support team in an effort to assist fellow officers dealing with critical incidents, stress, and trauma.


Erika Heavner

Lieutenant

Howard County Police Department

Lieutenant Erika Heavner is a 17-year veteran with the Howard County Police Department in Howard County, Maryland. She is currently a Lieutenant and serves as a day shift Watch Commander. She has previously held assignments including child abuse and sexual assault investigations, internal affairs investigations, 911 supervisor, and patrol operations.

Joseph King

Sergeant

Boston Police Department

Sergeant Joseph King is a 30-year veteran of the Boston Police Department and a United States Army Veteran of the Gulf War. Sgt. King currently serves as the Director of the Boston Police Peer Support and Family Assistance Units and is a member of the Critical Incident Stress Management Team. He has previously served as a Detective in the Homicide Unit, Drug Control Unit, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Task Force.


Aaron Oden

Lieutenant

Arlington Police Department, Arlington, Texas

Lieutenant Aaron Oden is a tenured law enforcement leader with the Arlington Police Department in Arlington, Texas. He is currently a Lieutenant and holds certifications in personal training and nutrition coaching. Within his own agency, he is a wellness instructor and peer support team leader. Beyond that, he is a regional wellness instructor, a national resilience trainer and has a passion for taking care of those who take care of others.

Michael Rodgriguez

Deputy Chief

Buffalo Grove Police Department

Deputy Chief Michael Rodriguez is a 26-year veteran of the Buffalo Grove Police Department in Buffalo Grove, Illinois. He serves as a Deputy Chief and has worked as a Criminal Investigator, Patrol Sergeant, Traffic Sergeant, and Lieutenant.  Deputy Chief Rodriguez earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Western Illinois University in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration. He also graduated from Northwestern Center for Public Safety Staff & Command and the FBI National Academy. In addition, he also serves as a subject matter expert in police administrative matters, narcotics, and traffic safety.

Beata Staszewski

Sergeant

Chicago Police Department

Sergeant Beata Staszewski has been a member of the Chicago Police Department since 2003, where she is currently a Sergeant in the Professional Counseling Division. Sgt. Staszewski holds a doctorate in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Traumatic Stress Psychology. She is licensed in Illinois as both a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor and is the First Vice President of the Chicago Association of Women in Law Enforcement (CAWLE).

Jimmy Waites

Detective

Baltimore County Police Department

Detective Jimmy Waites has more than 19 years of service with the Baltimore County Police Department and is currently assigned to Internal Affairs. Detective Waites also serves as the Victim’s Rights Advocate for the community and is the LGBTQIA+ Liaison for the department. Prior to joining the Baltimore County, Detective Waites served in the United States Navy for ten years. He has been married to his husband, Daniel, for over 30 years and is a stage 3 cancer survivor.

The window of tolerance describes the state where one is grounded, present, and able to regulate emotions. Officers will learn how this can affect their decision-making, along with resilience strategies that will help them regulate their emotions on and off work. Learned strategies will include tactical emotional visualization, which involves mentally envisioning and practicing responses to highly emotional scenarios to help gain the skills and confidence needed to handle situations with rational decision-making.

Building resilience between calls can help law enforcement personnel be more present, alert, and effective from one call to the next. Officers will learn how practicing resilience between calls can benefit them personally by contributing to better decision-making and improving overall wellness and mental health. Learned strategies will include A.C.T. (Activities, Contributing, Thoughts) to teach how to manage distress at the moment.

Officers will learn to “downshift” from their law enforcement role to be fully present outside of work and to reduce overall stress. Learned strategies will include asking oneself questions to help decompress for the day, practicing mindfulness, grounding techniques, physical exercise, engaging in hobbies, and spending quality time with members of a support system.
Building a Flexible Mindset

Building a flexible mindset means transforming rigid ways of thinking and becoming more open to other available options. Rigid thinking occurs when an individual approaches a current situation based on past experiences or strongly held beliefs instead of learning new ways to handle the circumstance. Learned strategies will include asking questions of beliefs and thoughts to help reframe thinking.
