Quality sleep is often one of the first things sacrificed in a policing career, yet it serves as the foundation for effective decision-making, emotional regulation, physical recovery, stress management, and overall wellness. Long shifts, overnight schedules, hypervigilance, family responsibilities, and operational demands can make consistent, restorative sleep difficult to achieve. This course examines the critical role sleep plays in both performance and long-term health.
Learners will explore the unique sleep and recovery challenges associated with policing, including shift work, fatigue, stress, and recovery demands. The course provides practical strategies to improve sleep habits, optimize recovery routines, manage environmental and lifestyle factors that affect sleep, and develop a personalized sleep and recovery plan that supports sustained performance and well-being.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain how sleep influences performance, recovery, decision-making, stress management, and overall well-being
- Identify common sleep and recovery challenges associated with policing and shift work
- Recognize how habits related to caffeine, nutrition, light exposure, stress, and technology affect sleep quality
- Apply practical strategies to protect sleep and improve recovery despite demanding schedules
- Implement techniques to manage fatigue, downshift from operational stress, and support healthy sleep routines
- Create a personalized sleep and recovery plan to support long-term resilience and wellness
