Officer Involved Critical Incidents: Utilizing an OICI Peer Support Team

Salt Lake City, Utah, Police Department's Peer Support Team developed and implemented an officer wellness-oriented approach to critical incidents to engage with the involved officer and their families. The Officer-Involved Critical Incident (OICI) Peer Support team consists of officers who have survived critical incidents, instilling confidence and trust in those they support. Those who need support receive a comprehensive packet of available services and warning signs for officers and family members. Peer supporters maintain ongoing, positive contact to help normalize the feelings and experiences and ensure involved officers do not feel isolated or forgotten. This approach has been instrumental in ensuring officers return to work in good mental health, receive the necessary support, and establish vital relatable contacts.
