This conference workshop presentation discusses the importance of emotional intelligence skills for public safety personnel. Police are in the people business, and people are emotional creatures. Interacting with the public, from victims to suspects, requires empathy and other people skills from police professionals. Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the ability to understand and control one's own emotions, as well as recognize and influence the emotions of others. EQ skills can be learned and applied both personally and professionally to help an officer be more resilient, happier at home and work, and better suited to deal with the negative aspects of the policing profession ? along with preparing officers to enter the wonderful world of retirement.

Dr. Michael Goold is a retired Chief of Police and subject matter expert on Emotional Intelligence in Public Safety. He wrote his doctoral dissertation on Compassion Fatigue and Traumatic Stress in 9-1-1 personnel. Dr. Goold is a leadership coach and the CEO of SiTNA Solutions. He is an adjunct faculty member in the Organiational Leadership Doctoral Program and MBA program for Brandman University. He enjoys the outdoors of Southern Utah and being with his ever growing family.

Dr. Obed Magny is an emotional intelligence trainer and Founder of Magny Leadership, a service offering emotional intelligence training for police officers. Obed is an international keynote speaker and advocate for evidence-based policing. Obed Magny helps police organizations become transformative in building trust and legitimacy by creating innovative strategies to reduce negative interactions between public safety officers and the public. All of which are part of his mission to change the perspectives of public safety from negative to positive. Over the course of his career and research, Obed recognized a recurring theme in policing: transactional relationships were the primary source of contention between organizations and the communities they serve. With nearly two decades of experience as a police officer, Obed now dedicates his life to helping police organizations become transformative in their endeavors in fostering trust and legitimacy in their communities through evidence-based methods. Obed has taught diversity and qualitative research classes at the doctoral level and spoken all over the country on various issues related to policing. Obed has also worked with many organizations in the public and private sectors such as public safety, K-12, and higher education and has coached many police chiefs, leaders in policing, high school principles, and leaders from various industries. Obed has been featured in INSIDER, CBS Sacramento, ABC Austin, ABC Dallas, KPFK Radio and several podcasts to name a few.
