Creating and Sustaining Diversity for 21st Century Policing

This conference workshop presentation highlights how today's law enforcement leadership can increase trust, respect, and community feelings regarding fair and equitable treatment and shares a host of promising practices. There has been a great deal of discussion in the media and within law enforcement circles on how law enforcement can build trust and serve the ever-changing diverse communities. Much of the discussion centers on recruitment and training within police departments. There is a belief that departments that better mirror the racial make-up of the communities they serve will improve and enhance communication amongst citizens and their department. Improved communication and understanding on both sides can lead to increased trust, respect, and community feelings regarding fair and equitable treatment.
